As The Stock Of Shoreditch Rises The Flow Of Investment Increases

Packed full of trendy bars, pop ups and more artist than a festival line up it is safe to say that Shoreditch has captured the imagination of many. It has also captured the attention of property developers who see opportunities to develop land and create housing.

The latest developer to move in is British Land who entered into an agreement with the City of London Corporation to redevelop London’s Shoreditch Estate. The land has potential for 320,000 sq ft of office, retail and residential accommodation in a mix of new, retained and refurbished buildings.

Nigel Webb, head of development at British Land, said: “We are excited by the site’s potential to provide a vibrant mix of offices integrated with retail and leisure uses along with high quality residential. We expect the smaller offices to appeal to increasing demand from technology and media companies in this area of London. A number of the existing buildings will be retained and brought back into active use to provide an attractive and characterful environment.”

While inward investment in the area is a great thing some feel the character that has drawn many to the area could be lost. Perhaps more boutique developers would be favoured, the likes of Londonewcastle have schemes being built in the area. Regardless of who develops where it is key that the character of Shoreditch is maintained and enhanced.
