Inspired Dwellings Founder Rob Sutherland Talks To Us On How Technology Works Hard For London Homes.

Inspired Dwellings are a south west London based company who specialise in bespoke design & installation of home automation, sound & vision and technology. Rob Sutherland took some time out to talk about ways in which tech is enhancing homes.

Hi-tech homes are widely reported to do clever and amazing tasks – feeding the cat when you are away or calling out for milk. The reality is very different. In London properties, large or small, home technology needs careful planning. It is less about gadgets and more about the difference achieved with smart lighting and embedded entertainment.

Light – A Natural Aid

Light is a natural tool to make the most of City spaces and is best approached with the design process.  You can immediately tell the difference between a room that was designed first and lit afterwards, and one where the lighting design was integrated at the beginning.

Home Cinema, Music and Entertainment

London homeowners also look for an exceptional audio and video quality in multiple rooms. Sound really can make a great living space, when it has been well considered televisions, entertainment systems, speakers and home cinema units will blend seamlessly and discretely into the desired environment. Essential to this is the behind the scenes networking and connectivity which we specify and install as the build starts.

Each home is different, so anyone commissioning this type of work must demand a bespoke and dedicated service. The first stage is always to ensure the correct high quality cabling and connectivity is planned for a discrete installation. Technical is always done offsite as specialists build, test and install a single control rack to power all the devices.  Above all the audio, visual and lighting design has to be developed in tandem with the architecture or interior design, allowing the home environment to dictate the technology.

Retaining and Preserving Period Features

In London the most talked about developments are those that retain and preserve period features.  It is often said that London homes lose their character as they are over improved.

Last year the specialist architect led renovation of a grade II listed former hospital in central London presented a challenge of needing to work around restricted cabling.  The lighting response was to install ambient lighting through the coffered ceilings. We also installed discrete, clever lighting to enhance original alcoves and structural features in the newly created sitting room. This design used colour cycle LED lighting strip, plate-less or invisible data points and sockets. Light spread through the house; in the modern kitchen a sense of space was achieved with under counter and plinth lighting detail, as well as including quirky details like light flowing from the kitchen tap.

Day by day we depend on smart phones, internet, social media and tablet devices. Used well, technology can only support and enhance the way we live, work and relax. The best and most stunning properties will blend comfortable domestic touches with the hi-tech features.

This might look effortless, but stunning results can only be achieved with a design led response where homeowners have been guided to think long and hard about what technology can do for their living space.
